Cheeseman is a friendly ski (club) area that promotes a fun, family environment in an alpine setting and is open to the public.
It is the second closest ski area to Christchurch and boasts a sunny northeast basin with open rolling terrain. With great beginner and intermediate slopes, Mt Cheeseman is perfect for learners and families. Two T Bars give easy access to well-groomed gentle terrain with the Learners Tow located right beside the main lodge. Mt Cockayne offers great off-piste conditions and the face holds snow well.
For adventurers looking for untracked trails and off-piste experiences, Mt Cockayne offers challenging skiing and fantastic views of the Craigieburn Range. The Ridge T-bar also offers access to the back country for day trips. Please note that there is no ski patrol beyond the ski area boundary therefore you are entirely responsible for your own safety
You can choose to stay up on the mountain in Snowline Lodge or alternatively Forest Lodge, which is nestled in the Beech Forest and is an easy 5 minute drive in from SH 73. Cheeseman runs Ski Week holiday packages which include lift passes, accommodation, meals and lessons, stay for a week or just a couple of days.
Mt. Cheeseman Tips:
- If you are keen on a taste of backcountry, it is little effort to drop into Tarn Basin to get some fresh lines. You must check in with ski patrol if you intend on heading out of bounds, as Tarn Basin is not patrolled.
- Cheeseman offers a parent pass for $79, two full day lift passes for the price of one, for two parents with a toddler of three years or under.
