Mt Ruapehu is the North Island's premier skiing destination, located midway between Auckland and Wellington. It is hard not to be impressed by the mammoth volcano, Mt Ruapehu, home to two of New Zealand’s largest ski areas, Whakapapa and Turoa,
Ruapehu offers an expanse of varied terrain, arguably some of the most interesting and challenging in the country. Tukino, located on the mountain's eastern side, is a smaller club area with limited facilities but unlimited character.
In recent years, both Turoa and Whakapapa have had considerable upgrades. Whakapapa most recently with the new “Sky Waka” in 2019. Despite this, and partly due to weather, on “bluebird days” in the weekends, both areas can get pretty busy. Our advice if you're considering a days skiing, ski mid-week if possible.
There’s awesome skiing to be had here, especially spring, with a huge amount of varied terrain. Ski mid-week, or spring, to avoid the crowds and you’re sweet tho!
