2023 NZ Ski Season Opening Dates
Mt Hutt, Opening June 10!

“Summer” (was there one?) has gone and the 2023 New Zealand ski season is all but upon us. Find out who is opening and when.

First to Open for 2023 Ski Season?

As usual, a smaller ski area stole the first opening prize, with Manganui ski area opening on Friday 12th May 2023 for 3 days. Then they closed …  who’s next? Mt Hutt!

Manganui June 11 2023. First to open!

We have had early snow this year in the South Island, but it didn’t last (you know the story, snow in May …) So by June 1, the cupboard was bare again. Damn! But then came “the big storm” and while the big storm was maybe less epic than expected, it delivered 20cm of snow to Mt Hutt, and cold temps.

Mt Hutt - June 1 2023

Mt Hutt - June 6 2023

Last season Mt Hutt opened on June 17, but just announced, Mt Hutt will open Saturday June 10!   The good news is that it looks like we’re into a decent cycle of cold weather for snow making, finally!

NZ Ski Season Opening Dates – 2023

OK then, who next on the list? Note these are subject to change and Whakapapa & Turoa dates could change with any new ownership, we will find out more mid-June.

Thanks to Eric Raven who manages our Facebook group for doing the research!

NZ School Holidays:

This year the New Zealand School Holidays are July 1 – July 16 so we’d be pretty confident all the big areas will be open, especially with more snow and very cold temps forecast later next week.

Meanwhile, keep an eye on our reports and forecast. We’re experimenting with new forecasts this year and we have an number of other improvements planned, we’ll keep you posted!
